# Building Authority for AEO

# Building Trust and Authority

AI answer engines don't just randomly pick content – they are programmed to favor sources that appear trustworthy, authoritative, and up-to-date. In ecommerce, "trust" can come from various signals: your site's reputation, the accuracy of your data, customer reviews, and even how you cite information. Building that trust and authority increases the likelihood that an AI assistant will recommend your product or quote your content.

## Ensure Factual Accuracy & Update Content

AI models (especially those connected to real-time search) cross-check information. If your product page or a blog post contains outdated or incorrect information, the AI might ignore it. Always provide correct specifications and details, and update pages when anything changes. Indicating a "last updated" date on content can be a positive signal of freshness. For example, an article titled "Best Smartwatches of 2024 (Updated June 2025)" tells the AI that your content is current. Also, if you mention facts or figures in content, get them right and cite sources if appropriate. AI systems trained to prioritize reliable sources will view a well-cited, accurate piece as more trustworthy.

## Leverage Reviews and Ratings

Reviews are social proof and can be considered a measure of quality. Some AI systems incorporate sentiment analysis of reviews. For instance, if your product has significantly better reviews than a competitor, an AI might rank it higher when asked for "best" or "top-rated" recommendations. Encourage customers to leave reviews on your Shopware shop (and external platforms like Google if applicable). Display aggregate ratings on your site (and include them in structured data). Not only can this earn rich snippet stars, but an AI might literally read out or summarize review highlights. PayPal's partner, for example, Perplexity AI, is known to integrate multiple info sources – it could mention “This product is rated 4.8/5 by users on Shop XYZ.” Ensure your review content is authentic and address negative feedback; a string of negative reviews might lead an AI to filter out your product for quality concerns (trust & safety filters).

## Authoritative Content and Expertise

If you produce content (like buying guides, product comparisons, or how-to articles) around your industry, do so with expertise and depth. High-quality content can establish your site as an authority. Google’s algorithms (and likely AI that uses Google's index) **consider E-E-A-T** (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) guidelines. For example, a detailed guide on "How to choose the right running shoes" on your blog could be picked by Google as part of an answer summary for someone asking that question. Within that, your product might be recommended. To be authoritative:

- Include author names and credentials on content if relevant
- Cite external reputable sources when providing statistics or claims, as this can improve credibility
- Avoid thin content – make sure whatever content you create genuinely helps users

## Knowledge Graph and Business Profiles

AI chatbots, especially those by Google and Microsoft, often pull from knowledge graphs for factual queries. Ensure your business information is accurate across the web. For instance, maintain your Google Business Profile if you have a physical store (this can influence local suggestions or trust signals for your brand). If your brand is notable enough for Wikipedia or Wikidata, ensure those entries are accurate. While this is more relevant to larger brands, even mid-sized ecommerce sites benefit from consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data across directories.

## Technical Security and Reliability

Use HTTPS, as Chrome/Google will flag insecure sites. An AI likely won’t send a user to a non-HTTPS site for a purchase. Ensure your site’s uptime is good; if an AI can’t reach your site (or detects frequent downtime), it might consider it unreliable to send customers there.

## Transparency and Policies

Clearly display your policies (shipping, returns, privacy). Trustworthiness isn't just about data; it’s about the overall sense that a user (and by extension, an AI) gets that you're a legitimate, customer-friendly business. For instance, if an assistant is comparing two vendors, it might "know" from data that your store has free shipping and a 30-day return, whereas another has tricky terms.

In summary, be the source of truth and quality. AIs are getting better at evaluating which sources to trust. By being meticulous with information, engaging with customer feedback, and establishing your site’s expertise in your domain, you increase the likelihood that AI shopping assistants will trust and recommend your products.
