# Payment Methods Essentials

<LearningObjectives>

- **Use** shared payment and **Shopware Payments** terminology consistently across commerce, finance, and support teams.
- **Trace** the payment lifecycle from **checkout** through **payout** and explain **multi-account** mapping to **sales channels**.
- **Compare** payment **method families** and **local methods** for your target markets.
- **Design** a documented **launch method mix** that balances conversion, cost, and operational effort.

</LearningObjectives>

# Course 2: Payment Methods Essentials

**Strum & Co.** finished Course 1 knowing *why* **Shopware Payments** fits their stack. Now their owner faces a different problem: *which payment methods should we actually enable — and how do we know if we got it right?*

The instinct is to enable everything and let customers choose. The reality is that every method added to checkout brings its own **support load**, **refund path**, **fee structure**, and **operational overhead**. A logo checklist is not a strategy.

This course helps you build one. You will connect **method families**, **local preferences**, and **channel configuration** to **conversion**, **operations**, and **finance** — so every method you enable is a deliberate choice, not a default setting you never revisited.

---

## What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

- Use payment terminology consistently across commerce, finance, and support teams
- Trace the full payment lifecycle — from checkout through payout — and understand what each step means for your operations
- Compare payment method families and identify which fits your customers and markets
- Design a launch method mix that balances conversion, operational effort, and cost
- Assess how method choices affect refunds, disputes, and support volume during launch planning

## How This Course Is Organized

Five units follow a deliberate sequence — vocabulary and lifecycle first, then method strategy.

| # | Unit | What It Covers |
|---|------|----------------|
| 1 | **Key Terminology** | Short definitions for lifecycle, PSP, method, platform, economics, and dispute vocabulary reused across this learning path |
| 2 | **How Payments Work in Ecommerce** | End-to-end flow from checkout to payout; Shopware and PayPal roles; multi-account capabilities and administration account management |
| 3 | **Payment Method Categories** | Card, wallet, bank-based, BNPL, voucher, and real-time families; **PayPal Web SDK v6** availability; wallet and BNPL options |
| 4 | **Local Payment Methods** | Why local methods lift conversion; EU examples; **dynamic component loading** at checkout; availability checks |
| 5 | **Choosing a Launch Method Mix** | A structured checklist to balance customer preference, technical effort, operational impact, and **BNPL** decisions at launch |

**Strum & Co.** appears throughout — working through method decisions for their EU markets, mapping PayPal accounts to sales channels, and measuring what actually moved conversion after launch.

## Before You Start

This course builds directly on Course 1. If you have not completed it, the units on lifecycle and economics will make more sense with that foundation in place.

If some terms feel unfamiliar as you begin, Unit 1 is a reference glossary you can return to at any point in the course.
