# Disputes Essentials for Merchants

<LearningObjectives>

- **Distinguish** **dispute**, **claim**, and **chargeback** entry points and respond with the right urgency at each stage.
- **Match** dispute **reason labels** to the evidence and timelines you need before the window closes.
- **Explain** how **funds holds** affect available balance and cash planning during open cases.
- **Build** lean **evidence packs** and apply **prevention habits** that reduce dispute volume over time.

</LearningObjectives>

# Course 5: Disputes Essentials

**Strum & Co.'s** support lead forwarded a dispute notification to the owner with the subject line: "We have a chargeback." It was not a chargeback. It was a dispute — the cheapest and fastest stage to resolve, with a 20-day window still open.

By the time they understood the difference, four days had passed.

This course makes sure that does not happen to your team. Disputes are a process, not a surprise — and most of the outcome is determined by whether you know which stage you are at, what evidence to prepare, and how to act before the window closes.

## What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

- Distinguish between a dispute, a claim, and a chargeback — and respond to each with the right urgency
- Read the **Resolution Center** for status, deadline, and next action without confusion
- Match your evidence to the reason label on the case — not to your instinct
- Understand how funds are held during open cases and what that means for cash planning
- Apply the five prevention habits that reduce dispute volume before cases are opened

| 3 | **Funds, Holds, and Cash Planning** | What a hold means for your balance, what happens when a case closes, and how to plan cash around open cases |
| 4 | **Building a Lean Evidence Pack** | What to submit for each case type, how Seller Protection applies, and the four submission rules that win cases |
| 5 | **Prevention Habits** | The five levers that reduce dispute volume — descriptor clarity, communication, returns, documentation, and monitoring |

## Before You Start

The **Resolution Center** was introduced in Course 3, Unit 1 as the place to check regularly. This course opens it fully — covering every workflow from first notification to case close.

The glossary in Course 2, Unit 1 covers dispute, claim, chargeback, and Seller Protection terminology used throughout.
